a mistake

You know that pretty picture below of the new maple in the half wine barrel?  Well--we didn't quite do what we should have done to get the wine barrel waterproofed.  The main mistake was letting it sit on the porch for a week before we filled it with dirt and plants.  It dried out and the wood contracted so that it was no longer watertight.

We planted our tree in the barrel last night and watered it....there very well have been more water on the deck than in the pot.

Suffice to say, we are headed to the nursery tonight to buy a ceramic pot to re-pot our pretty little tree.  I don't think the barrel is salvageable as a planter.  And I have no idea what else we could use it for.  I hate the idea of throwing it out.

At the same time, I am concerned with the weight of the pot and the tree and dirt when it all comes together.  Our other plants are quite heavy and david and a guy friend had a heck of a time hauling those up the stairs to our condo when we moved in.  I'm not worried that there will be too much weight on the deck (although there is a little bit of paranoia in me about that-if I am honest with myself), but really more worried that we won't be able to move it to our next place (wherever or whenever that is.)

ah, life lessons.
