Wonderful Birthday Dinner

Last night David took me to Canlis (www.canlis.com), which is perched high above lake union.  It has great views of the lake and parks, neighborhoods, etc.  Our reservation was for 6:45, so we got there well before the sun was to go down, and we stayed until after the sun set.  It was really pretty.

Although we felt a little out of place (it is out of our typical price range), I think we got comfortable after we ordered our food.  It is one of the few restaurants in seattle where they RECOMMEND that guys wear jackets.  They don't require it, but just about all the men had jackets on.  We speculated that the ones without jackets were regulars who hit it big in the dot.com industry and thus don't feel a need to wear a jacket, because they are there often.

I'll give you a run-down of our meal.  We decided not to order wine to make dinner more affordable.  We ordered ginger ale instead.  It tasted a bit like an adult shirley temple, which led me to believe they were not out of the can, but were created on the premises.

They immediately brought fancy crackers to the table with butter.  When they got a batch of hot rolls out of the oven, they brought those around too.  The first course was a lightly breaded calamari with a wonderful pesto type sauce with it.  The second course was the "Canlis Salad" that we shared.  We got the recipe for it at the end of the night.  David ordered the Scallops and I ordered the Petite Filet Mignon.  The dishes were beautiful.  Everything had wonderful presentation and looked quite appetizing.  And it was delicious.  We both really enjoyed our meals.  We had pre-ordered the chocolate lava cake, because they are cooked to order and take quite awhile, so after the meal was over and we were given some time to let the food digest a bit, they brought out the lava cake with icecream, a strawberry, and a port wine/raspberry reduction sauce.  It was heavenly.

I'd say it was one of the top 2 or 3 meals I've ever had.  Definitely a good birthday present!

I'll email you a REALLY easy and excellent lava cake recipe. It's nice every once in a while when I feel naughty.

Sorry I missed you when I called. I'll try tonight or this weekend. Glad you had a nice birthday dinner.

Carolyn, I'd love an easy lava cake recipe. And I look forward to talking to you soon.

Will, that is almost exactly how I told david the ginger ale was probably made. That is what we used to do at Red Lobster when people requested ginger ale. but I don't think we used Bitters. Also these ginger ales had a sweet/cherry flavor, and were slightly pink, so we think they used a little cherry juice. It didn't taste like grenadine.
