A boy and a girl in a little canoe, with the sun shinin' all around....
David and I took out his canoe yesterday. The weather was pretty good, although it did start spitting for awhile- but we could hardly feel it. Canoeing is hard work- I was a lot warmer than I thought I would be. I actually had to take off a layer. The canoe is a tank. I don't know if I already said this, but seriously- we could have taken out some of the wimpier aluminum canoes ;-).
It was fun, and I'm sure we will do it again soon. We do plan to try and bring sam with us at some point, but we need to get him a doggie PFD first. I am a little worried about him jumping over the side to chase after birds/ducks, but I guess we will just have to try it close to shore on the first time in case he does jump so we can swim him back to shore. There is no way we could pull him up into the canoe with out swamping it, at least I don't think so. Maybe David knows better with his years of canoeing experience.

For those of you who didn't grow up in the girl scouts, here are the lyrics that I remember to the song Liz quoted:
"A boy and a girl in a little canoe, with the moon shinin' all around...as he applied his paddle, you couldn't even hear a sound.
So they talked and they talked 'til the moon grew dim, he said you better kiss me or get out and swim so whatcha gonna do in a little canoe with the moon shinin' all-a, girl swimmin' all-a, moon shinin' all around!"
Em- David made me sing it for him.;-) apparently they didn't sing it in boy scouts. I even did all the hand motions.
Now- I never even thought about this when I was younger, but what is the moral/lesson of this song? Don't get into a boat alone with a boy? Boys can threaten you to make you do stuff? I'm not so sure I like this song anymore--although it was one of my favorites as a little girl scout.
agreed. i was analyzing it from a feminist perspective also, and i figured that if you ignore the morbid paddle-silence imagery and sexual threats, it ultimately references the girl's own agency. similar to the end of that one story where the woman walks out into the water, albeit to die...but hinting at final empowerment. also the moon has a stronger presence in the song than i remembered, perhaps drawing from the ecofeminist notion of woman as nature...the moon was cheering her on/protecting her, etc, so very girl scout, in my opinion.
ps- i plan to sing it to mel as soon as she catches up with your blog!!
